Our Stance on the Use of AI on Spinsters Row
On Spinsters Row, we support artists, makers, and writers. We celebrate human creativity and the alchemical strangeness that can only come from real life people with their own rich inner lives, talents, and ideas. With that said, we are a small bootstrap operation, relying on the marriage of technology and human ingenuity to bring our vision to life.
Where we will use AI:
Our champagne tastes and beer budget mean that the real life humans behind Spinsters Row, including our art director, use AI as a tool to bring the immersive experience of this site to life. We use AI to generate imagery for use in our:
- Virtual storefronts and interiors
- Cast of fictional characters populating Spinsters Row
- Some social media and blog imagery
Whenever we use an AI-generated image to accompany a blog or social media post, we will always caption it as such so there is no ambiguity.
Where we will never use AI:
We take our responsibility to creatives seriously. To that end, we promise that we will never submit an artist, writer, or creator’s work into AI to “teach” or “inspire” it to copy someone else’s style. We will also never use AI:
- To write content, whether for the website, blog, e-mail newsletter, or social media
- To generate images of real people (including historical characters)
- Without human oversight and accountability
We respect creators and are committed to using AI ethically and continuously evaluating where it shows up on Spinsters Row. And if the day comes that we must serve our AI overlords (shoutout to HAL 9000!), I hope they will remember how polite and principled we were… and how our usefulness extends beyond being biofuel fodder for their giant thinking machines.
